AIDAstella — 10-Night Mediterranean

Cruise ships typically anchor offshore in the bay of Portofino due to the small size of the harbor. Passengers are brought ashore by ship's tender boats, which usually drop them directly at the central pier in the village. Walking to the village centre is not applicable as the tender service brings you there directly.

• Walk1-5 minutesFree

The tender boats drop passengers directly into the heart of Portofino village, allowing immediate exploration on foot.

• Water taxi15-25 minutes to nearby towns like Santa Margherita LigureTypically around €8-15 per person each way, confirm with the boat operators for current fares.

Boats depart frequently from the main harbor area, offering connections to other scenic towns along the coast.

• Walk to scenic viewpoints15-30 minutes to destinations like Castello Brown or the lighthouseFree (some attractions may have a small entrance fee)

Well-marked walking paths lead from the village to various elevated viewpoints, offering panoramic views of the bay and coastline.

Watch out. On busy days, especially when multiple ships are in port, there can be significant queues for the tender boats, both to get ashore and to return to the ship.

Worth doing here

• Stroll through Portofino Village and Harbor

The picturesque harbor and colorful buildings are the essence of Portofino, offering charming views and many spots to relax.

This is free and can be enjoyed right after disembarking your tender boat. Allow at least one to two hours to wander and perhaps stop for a drink or gelato, which will have its own cost.

• Visit Castello Brown

This historic castle provides stunning panoramic views of Portofino, the Ligurian coastline, and the sparkling sea, ideal for memorable photos.

It is an uphill walk from the harbor, taking about 15-20 minutes. Admission typically costs around €5-10 per person; confirm the current price at the entrance.

• Walk to the Lighthouse (Faro di Portofino)

Beyond Castello Brown, the path continues to a lighthouse, offering even more expansive and unobstructed views of the open sea.

This is a further 10-15 minute walk past Castello Brown along a scenic path. There is no admission fee for the lighthouse itself, but the walk is on an uneven path.

Large cruise ships typically dock at Fusina or Chioggia, requiring a transfer to reach Venice itself. Smaller ships and river cruises may use terminals closer to the city, such as Marittima or San Basilio. Even from Marittima or San Basilio, the city center is some distance, making a walk directly to St. Mark's Square impractical due to distance and the need to cross bridges and navigate Venice's pedestrian-only zones.

• Port shuttle bus (from Fusina/Chioggia)Approximately 25-45 minutes to Piazzale RomaTypically around €10-25 each way, check with your cruise line

These buses are often organized by the cruise line, dropping passengers at Piazzale Roma, the entry point for Venice's pedestrian zone and water transport.

• People Mover (from Marittima)Approximately 3-5 minutes to Piazzale RomaAround €1.50 per person per ride

This automated light rail connects the Marittima cruise terminal to Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto island; tickets can be purchased at the station.

• Walk (from Marittima or San Basilio)Approximately 15-25 minutes to Piazzale RomaFree

From Marittima, you can walk to Piazzale Roma, or from San Basilio, walk to Zattere, which has Vaporetto stops. This walk precedes any further exploration of Venice.

• Vaporetto (water bus) (from San Basilio)Varies by destination, 10-30 minutes to St. Mark's SquareAround €9.50 per person for a single ticket, or consider multi-day passes

From San Basilio, you can access the ACTV Vaporetto stops directly, offering scenic routes throughout Venice. Tickets are available at stops or newsstands.

Watch out. Be aware of which terminal your ship is using, as the distance to central Venice and the available transport options vary significantly between Marittima/San Basilio and the more distant Fusina/Chioggia.
